Abu Dhabi Gains New Camp Site at AL Wathba Lake

ABU DHABI GAINS NEW CAMP

The Department of Municipalities and Transport has announced the opening of Al Wathba Lake Camp, which will provide Abu Dhabi residents with a new “attractive and safe destination” for camping and picnicking.

Opened on Friday 11th Feb, Abu Dhabi‘s latest multi-purpose camping site offers residents and international visitors a user-friendly experience that adds to, and complements, the Emirates’ existing recreational and leisure offerings. The site – which is a 45-minute drive from the centre of Abu Dhabi – will also be used to host events and activities that promote the health and well-being of residents and the natural environment.

The new Abu Dhabi camp site surrounds the man-made Al Wathba Lake. Strict protection of the natural environment and controlled access will be implemented to maintain the edges of the lake and its fusion with the desert landscape. Al Wathba Lake is the centre of a wetland reserve with a large population of Greater Flamingos – with as many as 4,000 living there during autumn and spring. It is also home to more than 250 species of birds, 37 plant species and a wide range of aquatic life.

The site offers 13 separate campsites for tents and RVs, with a view of the lake or the desert, for up to 120 people in a breathtaking natural setting. It also includes 24 picnic sites with dedicated areas for barbecues, and 3,000 sq m of recreation and gathering space for over 500 visitors per day.

An alternative tourism destination for Abu Dhabi

Al Wathba Lake Camp integrates a 1,400 metres of walking and running path around the lake, a new 1,200-metre long cycle path pump track, with an activities’ rental centre, two volleyball courts, and seven playgrounds. There are also two observation decks to enjoy panoramic views.

Commercial activities and utilities are limited but include space for 10 food trucks, cafes, rental services, and provide supporting facilities including parking, first aid unit management facilities, restrooms and waste management.

H.E Dr. Salem Khalfan Al Kaabi, acting director general of operational affairs in the Department of Municipalities and Transport said: “This new destination is part of DMT’s strategy to develop sustainable, pioneering and smart infrastructure, facilities and services for the prosperity and happiness of the community and to enhance the attractiveness, livability and quality of life of Abu Dhabi.”
