Blue & Green Laamu, September 2022

'Giving for Good'

During September, MUI celebrated World Manta Day with three guest activities and two community events! Rhiannon, a PhD student from the University of Exeter, completed 20 coral surveys across 10 different sites. Manta Trust had several manta encounters at Fonadhoo Beyru, an outside reef dive site with a potential cleaning station. Shaha was selected as one of the ten Maldivian aquanauts to join Nekton and Maldivian Government’s Maldives Deep Sea Expedition. Blue Marine Foundation hosted the second Laamaseelu Masveriyaa fisher meeting and conducted a snorkeling camp in Kunahandhoo. The Olive Ridley Project had a surprise hatching event and Sarah joined as a new intern. For ‘Giving for Good’, 239 community members took part in the activities and approximately 990 kg of trash was collected! Finally, Earth Lab celebrated World Coconut Day and invited the Kunahandhoo Women Development Committee to demonstrate the many uses of coconuts in the Maldives to hosts and guests.
