JLF 2023 Session Notes Day 3

HINDI

Ek Hindi Anek Hindi

Geetanjali Shree, Nand Bhardwaj, Anamika, Sanjiv Chadha and Pushpesh Pant in conversation with Yatindra Mishra

Session Notes:

The conversation between Geetanjali Shree, Nand Bhardwaj, Anamika, Sanjiv Chadha and Pushpesh Pant focused on the diversity of Hindi and the difficulty of purifying it. They discussed how the different variants of Hindi across India get embedded in languages across the subcontinent, resulting in a Kolkata Hindi, a Mumbai Hindi, and so on. They also criticised the purification of languages and discussed how the borders of Hindi are fluid, and the role played by authors writing in Hindi today in keeping this alive. The discussion ended with the future of Hindi and if there can be a new Hindi as times change.

The Dawn of Everything

David Wengrow in conversation with Rebecca Wragg Sykes

Quote: David Wengrow, “…you are often told as an academic, if you want to write for a broader audience you must dumb down, you know basically dumb down your writing and sort of talk to people as if they are fools and I think that’s nonsense and I’m very happy we’ve hopefully gone some way to show that, that’s not true…”

The Dawn of Everything by Authors David Wengrow and late David Graeber provides an extraordinary perspective of human history and social evolution, challenging our most fundamental assumptions to reveal a broader scope for human emancipation. In conversation with archaeologist and writer Rebecca Sykes, archaeologist and anthropologist David Wengrow gave an insight on the theories of primitive ancestors, barbarism, human instinct, the origin of states and civilisations and their ties to the conflict between European society and indigenous discourse. They finally connected this to today’s world and the need for radical change in a political climate that is opposed to such transformations.

Translating Tagore
